Asia to take centre stage in the global summit to address planetary health
PETALING JAYA (March 8): The Planetary Health Alliance (PHA) will be hosting the sixth Planetary Health Annual Meeting (PHAM), which is being held in Asia for the first time, at the Sunway University campus next month.
Recognising Asia’s pivotal role in finding solutions for and addressing planetary health issues, the summit theme "From Evidence to Action: Confronting Reality”, co-hosted by the Sunway Centre for Planetary Health, will take place between April 16 and 19.
Hosted every 18 months, PHAM brings together scientists, policymakers, educators, leaders, medical practitioners, private sector representatives, civil society and non-governmental organisations to foster connections and engage in collaborative efforts to amplify the decade-long planetary health movement.
One of PHAM's primary initiatives is to tackle significant challenges faced by human civilisation and act as a convening platform to showcase impactful scientific advancements, narratives, solutions and communities. It plays a vital role in building systemic solutions across economics, governance and civil society.
This year, the summit will highlight the impact of planetary health in accelerating the translation of science-based evidence into popular discourse.
“Sunway University recognises that we need to act now. While we are pleased that we are able to host this event at the university, we are convinced that this summit must not be simply a talking shop or purely an opportunity to showcase Malaysia. We are here to work, to debate issues essential to the ability of the planet and people to thrive together,” said Professor Tan Sri Dr Jemilah Mahmood, executive director of Sunway Centre for Planetary Health.
“At this 6th Planetary Health Annual Meeting, the message will be clear: Science must be transformational, crafted for action, and communicated in ways understandable to the public and accessible and useful to decision-makers.”
In the past, the summit was hosted at Harvard, Stanford, Sao Paulo and Edinburgh universities. For more information visit to www.pham2024.com.
